If you are interested in learning a few tunes, a new technique or two or are a music organisation looking for a whistle tutor then please get in touch. Private lessons are conducted in Fortrose on the Black Isle and are usually 30 minutes to an hour long depending on your requirements. Low and high whistles are catered for as well as whistles in keys other than D.
I teach airs, marches, strathspeys, jigs, reels, hornpipes on both low and standard whistles. Technique, gracing and any myths or tales I know of attached to the tunes is explored on the way. You can learn both by ear and music score.I have been tutoring for over 30 years and worked with people at all ages and stages. As well as providing private tuition, If you are looking to learn as part of larger class, I also do regular group sessions for: Highlife Highland Traditional Music Classes, Feis Nairn and Feis Rois. Details of these can be found on their own websites. If you are an organisation looking for a Scottish highland whistle tutor for a weekend or week of tuition don't hesitate to get in touch.
Lessons seek to help you get started or improve your whistle playing techniques, bring life and feeling to the music and develop the confidence in your playing. Generally a mix of play by ear and written music with its interpretation is used. So if you are just starting in music, or wanting ideas on putting more lilt in your jigs and swing in your marches, I may be able to help.
Current rate for private lessons is £25/hour.
"Inspired by the people of Scotland, and the joys, strife, and adventures of their lives against the backdrop of rugged hills, lochs, glens and gentle straths, Scottish music gives a little light to the emotions of the continuum. As an ancient technology the humble whistle has a legacy that reaches far back yet still goes forward."
