Bow Rehairing
I took up bow rehairing in 2014 after being introduced to it at Moray Colleges’ violin making course. I am mainly self-taught and use Sowdens bow hair..

Sowden’s Blue String – Strong, fine naturally white, mainly mare’s tail hair from the borderlands of Mongolia and China. It gives a smooth evenly finished bow.
Sowden’s Gold String pure Mongolian stallion hair- slightly thicker and stronger than the Blue String brand it is a rare naturally white hair.
Cost for violin/viola bow re-hairs: 2021 prices are £40 per bow.
For cello or double bass bows please get in touch for a quote.
Delivery/collection If you are local and wish to drop off and collect your bow yourself please get in touch to arrange a convenient time. Otherwise you can post your bow at your own risk and expense. Let me know before you post it to confirm I will be able to receive it. It should be packed in a suitable sturdy tube (under 85cm long) and will returned to you in a few days by royal mail special delivery at an additional cost of £10 to cover return post and packing. If your bow is valuable and you wish it insured for more than Royal Mails standard cover it may cost more. Check Royal Mail’s website for their terms and conditions.
Whilst every care will be taken in rehairing your bow, very rarely, bits of bows and frogs disintegrate when they are being taken apart or re-haired. Should this happen you will be advised as soon as possible. I will not accept liability for failure of the structural integrity of any part of a bow.
If the bow does not belong to you i.e., if you’ve borrowed or rented it, make sure you have the owner’s permission to get it re-haired.
Resin- I would put an initial start of resin on the new hair. if you don’t wish this or have a resin allergy please advise me.
